Qigong Sensory Treatment
QST - Tuina
Qigong Sensory Treatment (QST) massage is a proven, touch-based autism treatment for children that parents perform for 15 minutes each day for up to two years to normalize sensory issues and reduce or eliminate symptoms of autism.
This gentle, easy to learn and long-term affordable massage treatment has proven to have outstanding effects on the nervous system.
Not all disabilities can be cured, but by reducing sensory problems this will also reduce the severity of the disability whilst lowering parenting stress.
Results are apparent after as few as 30 days of treatment.
So what does this mean for those who find touch unpleasant?
This treatment is still highly recommended!
Various forms of pressure and technique are applied to head and body, to either increase or decrease the excitability of nerves depending on individual need.
This allows sensation of touch to be normalised, therefore changing the sensation of touch from unpleasant to pleasurable.
Parent Training
During the course of the treatment parents/caregivers receive training on how to massage their child and adjust massage according to child's needs.
The massage is applied on daily basis by the parents/caregivers, who are fully supported and guided by the therapist. The therapist will adapt the technique to the needs of the child.
Why do we recommend the carer learns these techniques instead of relying only on the therapist?
1: It is cost effective.
2: It can be done in the comfort of your own home, with minimal trips to the therapist.
3: These experiences provide a deep bonding experience, thus also reducing stress for both the receiver and the giver.
How many sessions with the therapist are required?
To learn how to sufficiently adapt the message to your child's needs we recommend a training of either 10 or 20 sessions, over a 10 or 20 week period.
By this time carer would learn everything that is needed to continue the daily massage independently.
Research
"Dr. Louisa Silva is the lead researcher for QST massage and founder of QSTI. She hypothesized that if autism develops because of loss of touch, then restoring touch with QST massage should reduce autism. In 15 studies in young children with autism, she showed that treatment with QST massage decreased the severity of all aspects of autism.
After five months of treatment:
