Autism
The cause of Autism is unknown but it is believed that it is a genetic biological neurological disorder, a disorder with an imbalance of Glutamate, GABA, Serotonin, Dopamine and Cortisol, all of which affect brain function. This in turn influences language and social communication and social interactions, this causes restrictions by repetitive behavior patterns, with abnormalities in sensory response. These restrictions are considered to be the primary characteristics in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and will be apparent by the age of three.
Secondary characteristic consists of hypo or hyper activity, anxiety, impulsivity, irritability, aggression toward self or others, sleep disorders, eating disorders.
Apart from being a genetic disorder it is speculated that environmental factors and or vaccines could be a contributing factor. It has been acknowledged that the limbic system is underdeveloped in children with ASD. The limbic system could be described as the house of emotions which is responsible for supporting behavior, emotions, long-term memory and motivation. The limbic system also stores our stressful memories which we recall intuitively to warn us from perceived dangers or uncomfortable situations.
